UNDER GRADUATE COURSES
Two compulsory courses are taught to under-graduates. In the first year the subject of Physical Optics , Electro-Magnetism and Atomic Physics are taught while in the second year Solid State Physics and Nuclear Energy are covered.
The department runs an M.Tech. degree course in Instrumentation. The aim of the course is to prepare scientific and engineering personnel for a design development career in the field of Instrumentation. The course lays emphasis on the technological approach to the design and development of instruments / techniques which find application in industries or in the laboratories of opto-electronics teaching/research institutions . There is also provision for a 2-semester M.Tech. course for students having PG diploma in Scientific Instrumentation.
The facilities include:
- Under-Graduate Laboratory for experiments in heat, light, sound, electricity and magnetism.
- Under-Graduate Laboratory for experiments in Atomic Physics and Solid State Physics.
- Post-Graduate Laboratory in Instrumentation
- Research Laboratory
- Personal Computers
The department offers facilities for research in various fields of Applied Physics, including Nano/Microtechnology, Applications of solid Nuclear Track Detectors, Instrumentation & sensors, conducting polymers, Dielectrics and theoretical Physics. Instruments and systems include Scanning Tunneling Microscope, Pentium III/IV Computers, Vacuum Coating Unit, UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, X-ray diffraction unit, Fibre-optic kit, electrometers, X-Y/t Recorders Potentiostat/Galvanostat, CCTV, storage oscilloscopes, DMM, High voltage D.C. Units, MHz Precision LCz meter, Research Microscope and Precision LCZ meter Radiometer. Besides, a corona charging set up is available for research in Electrophotography. The department is equipped with a small mechanical workshop for routine fabrication work of instruments and components.
Technical know-how of Opto electronic Instruments has been released to industrial organisations.
